Some images below of the works in progress; a fine eave and wall junction detail, charring timber and the water-jet cutting through aluminium plate. He liked it very much and told me I understood the Japanese concept of 'shakkei', or borrowed landscape. This was quite an honour from one of the world's most innovative cultural patrons, director and founder of the Chichu Museum on Naoshima Island - possibly Ando's finest building. The planted embankment outside the wide gallery becomes the 'third wall' of the gallery, creating opportunities for art installation and reference to landscape. The reflectivity of the glass adds complexity to the space, somehow to room seems to become a small world... The reflections of neon in the glass, seemingly overlayed on the near landscape, are stunning. Where dark stained timber posts site behind the glass, the neon is reflected more brightly. Where does the architecture finish and the artwork begin?
